A TASTE OF SHAKEPEARE

Performed by ACT’s MShakespeare Girls

Activate Community Through Theatre (ACT) is pleased to announce MShakspeare, an All-Girl ensemble performing  its first ‘Taste of Shakespeare’ production on June 10th, 11th at 7:30pm and June 12th at 3pm.  Performances are held at the Warehouse Performing Arts Center, 9216 Westmoreland Road, Cornelius, NC.

'A Taste of Shakespeare' is just that!  Audiences will get a taste of Shakespeare's Macbeth and A Midsummer Night's Dream, two 45 minute abridged versions of Shakespeare's most loved plays. Tragedy and comedy, sword fights and hip-hop dancing are all part of the evening's festivities as audiences enjoy free beverages and a snack.  It's an evening of 'Double double toil and trouble' versus 'Lord what fools these mortals be' - an evening with a taste of Shakespeare.

Dr. Wrenn Goodrum, Artistic Director of ACT has always dreamed of having an ALL-GIRL SHAKESPEARE company since she directed MACBETH for the Davidson Community Players, Connie Company’s ‘Shakespeare UnPlugged’.  ‘No males auditioned for MACBETH so I cast 17 girls in the roles.  It was a transformative experience for the cast as they discovered their own power and strength using the words of Shakespeare.

For ‘A Taste of Shakespeare’, Goodrum has cast nine ensemble members, aged 11 – 18, in forty roles in the two plays.  ‘Roles for females in Shakespeare are so limiting’ says Goodrum.  ‘When females in audiences see Shakespearean plays, they see males in the powerful roles but in our production they see girls playing males in powerful roles and somehow I feel they get a sense of power, subliminally.   The strength of our cast grows daily during the rehearsal process.  For example during their first stage fighting workshop, they giggled nervously at first and by the end of the workshop they were warriors.  I truly think that our cast and the females in the audience will be enlightened at the end of the production.

Performances are held at the Warehouse Performing Arts Center, 9216 Westmoreland Road in Cornelius, NC.  Ticket prices (including NC Sales Tax) are $8 for Children and Seniors and $10 for Adults.
